What does contents insurance cost in your new home?
Measured at 14 insurers: the same cover costs from 2.042 to 5.062 kr. a year, and the address alone can shift the price by up to 50 per cent.
Short answer
A 35-year-old living alone in a 75 m² flat in Østerbro, Copenhagen, with a sum insured for contents of 1.000.000 kr. and an excess of 2.000 kr. Same cover, 14 insurers, September 2026.
Contents insurance when you move into a home you own
Contents insurance (indboforsikring) covers your belongings, your liability towards others and your legal expenses, and you need it whether you buy a house or a flat. In an owner-occupied flat (ejerlejlighed), the owners' association (ejerforening) usually holds the buildings insurance, but it covers the building's exterior, roof and shared installations, not your contents and not damage you cause yourself inside. Your current contents insurance does not automatically follow you to the new address, and neither does the price: insurers set prices according to where you live, how old you are and how much your contents are worth. Sammenligner.dk measured the price at 14 insurers for the same person with the same cover in September 2026, so you can see what the move does to the price before you start phoning around. Which add-ons are worth the money is covered in the guide to contents insurance add-ons, and the overview of all the policies is in insurance when buying a home.
What the same cover costs at each insurer
The table is one example, not a price list for you. But the ranking is worth knowing: the three cheapest are within 319 kr. of each other, and the most expensive insurer charges more than twice as much as the cheapest for the same level of cover. Age and household matter more than floor area
If you move in with someone, or you have children, the price goes up. As you get older, it goes down. The median price for a family with two children is 3.259 kr., for a 65-year-old in the same flat 2.032 kr. Floor area, on the other hand, makes almost no difference as long as the sum insured is the same: from 45 to 160 m² the median moves by 138 kr. a year.

The cheapest insurer also changes with the person. For young people it is TJM (1.556 kr. for a 19-year-old), for the family Forsia (2.387 kr.), and for the 65-year-old TJM again (1.259 kr.). Note that some of the cheapest are membership insurers; if you cannot become a member, the next insurer on the list is your real cheapest option.
The address: why the same contents cost different amounts in Copenhagen and on Funen
The address matters more than most people expect. Same person, same contents, same excess, but the median price in Copenhagen Ø is 2.909 kr., in Faaborg 1.688 kr. and on Bornholm 1.451 kr. So if you move out of the city, your contents insurance can become 42 per cent (Faaborg) to 50 per cent (Rønne) cheaper without you changing anything. If you move the other way, expect the opposite.

Cheapest single quote per town: Rønne 1.032 kr. (Alka), Faaborg 1.033 kr. (Alka), Nørresundby 1.086 kr. (Alka), Nykøbing F 1.153 kr. (TJM), Helsingør 1.271 kr. (Alka), Aarhus 1.285 kr. (Alka), Kolding 1.333 kr. (Alka), Holstebro 1.461 kr. (Alka), Copenhagen Ø 2.042 kr. (Alka). See how the individual insurers set their prices in the overview of cheap contents insurance.
The sum insured: set it correctly, not low
The sum insured for contents (indbosum) is the maximum the insurer pays if everything is lost. If you set it too low, the insurer can reduce the compensation when you make a claim, even for a minor claim. The cost of setting it correctly, on the other hand, is limited: from 500.000 kr. to 1.000.000 kr. the median costs 361 kr. more a year, and from 1 to 1,5 million kr. a further 649 kr. Several insurers charge nothing extra at all for the higher sums in this range. Read how to work out the sum in the guide to the sum insured for contents.

The practical side
Tell the insurer your new address before the handover day (overtagelsesdag), not after; the insurance must be active from the day you take over responsibility for the home. If you get early right of disposal (dispositionsret), the contents insurance must apply from the day your belongings are in the home. Get quotes from 2-3 insurers in good time, not the week before. If you buy a house, you also need buildings insurance, and the two are often linked on price: several insurers give a discount when both are with the same company, so always get quotes for both at once. Also check whether your current policy has a lock-in period; most contents insurance policies can be cancelled with one month's notice after the first year. See whether it pays to switch contents insurance for the new address. Car insurance prices also change with the postcode; see the price index for car insurance.
What many people get wrong
"From" prices in adverts usually apply to a young person with a low sum insured and a high excess, not to you. Compare on the same sum, the same excess and the same add-ons; otherwise you are not comparing prices but levels of cover. The other mistake is sticking with your old insurer because it was cheapest at your old address: the ranking of insurers changes from town to town, so the insurer that was cheapest for the flat in the city is not necessarily cheapest for the house outside the city. Questions and answers
How much does contents insurance cost in Copenhagen?
For a 35-year-old living alone in a 75 m² flat in Østerbro with a sum insured of 1.000.000 kr., the price ranged from 2.042 to 5.062 kr. a year at 14 insurers, measured September 2026. The median was 2.909 kr.
Does my contents insurance move with me?
No. You must report the new address to the insurer yourself, and the price changes with the address. The insurance must be active from the day you take over responsibility for the home.
Does floor area affect the price?
Very little, as long as the sum insured is the same: from 45 to 160 m² the median price moved by 138 kr. a year in the measurement. Address, age and household matter more.
All prices were measured by the Sammenligner.dk price team in September 2026 for one specific person and home, so the insurers can be compared on equal terms. Your price depends on your address, age, household, sum insured, excess and claims history. Membership insurers (LB Forsikring, Bauta, Runa, GF Forsikring, TJM, FDM, Popermo) require membership. The guide was produced in collaboration with Sammenligner.dk, which measured the prices and may receive commission if you take out a policy via their site; BoligKlar may receive a referral fee. The price is the same for you.
